Carpinus betulus commonly called European hornbeam is a medium-sized, deciduous tree that grows 40-60 feet tall. 'Columnaris' refers to the conical shape the tree takes on with its dense foliage that turns golden yellow in fall. Neither the flowers nor the fruit are ornamentally significant. The smooth gray bark adds an interesting dimension to the landscape. This is a relatively low maintenance tree, however it shouldn't be allowed to dry out.
